Make Pinterest work for you

Pinterest is a visual type of platform that is built with the intention to help people find what they are looking for. It is usually described as being a social platform but Pinterest is so much more than that. This is a search engine just like google and bing but the upside is you get to see what you’re looking for before heading over to the article saving you a lot of time you would have spent skimming through blog posts just to find what it is you were looking for.


Now when it comes to business, we all want to find that platform that just works for us and brings in all the positive vibes (plus traffic of course). This may just be the platform for you. Below I highlight 16 ways in which to make Pinterest work for you!

1: Activate the pin me button

Whether you're using Squarespace, Wordpress or any other type of website platform, you should be able to activate the pin it button so that all images on your website or blog become pinnable.

2: Connect and build relationships with influencers

There are a lot of influencers on Pinterest who have a large number of followers. Connect with these people and just on a superficial level. Try and engage with their content, repin, comment on their posts and slowly you will build a relationship with them and may even get them to repin some of your content. Just make sure to find influencers that are within your industry or niche.

3: Convert to a Business Page for the added benefits

Using a Pinterest personal page means that you don’t have access to the analytics. When you convert to a business page, you gain access to so much more information that will be relevant when deciding on which content to create. You get to know which boards contain the most pins, where your biggest audience comes from, the age groups of the most engaged audience and most importantly the topics that they are most interested in.

4: Use Boards to highlight the different aspects of Your Business

This should be one of the first things to do. Decide on different boards that you can have to lead potential customers back to your website. For example, if you’re a travel blogger, you’d have different boards that contain destination guides, packing guides, cuisines, best budget hotels, family vacation spots and so on. All these boards will contain pins that lead directly back to your website. Which at the end of the day is what we really want to happen.

5: Explore Rich Pins

Having rich pins enabled on your website means that all your pins now have more information attached to them. There're Different rich pins to choose from depending on your needs. Product, recipe, article and app pins. So instead of just a simple image showing up, you also provide a summary of what the image is all about right there on Pinterest.

6: Follow Others in your niche

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve cracked my head on which type of content to give out. But by following others who offer the same services as me, I get to see what content they’re giving out which inspires me to create my own. Pinterest is a rich source of content ideas if you know who to follow!

7: Always connect with people who comment on your pins

When someone takes the time out of their day to comment on your pin then please go and connect with them. That may be a possible customer or even someone who could probably enrich your business in one way or another. So, go comment and show them that there is a person behind the brand.

8: Heed Image Dimensions as You Pin

Pinterest works with vertical or square type of pins. There is a specific width that I use for my pins which is about 765px (pixels) and the length is all up to you. There are many sites out there that have these templates ready for use such as Canva. So just make sure that your pins are vertical and not horizontal.

9: Create your own Group Board

Group boards are a great way of connecting with not only influencers but also followers. Not only should you join different group boards but try to create one of your own and invite others to be members. This way you get the best of both worlds! Not only will you be in charge but the other members bring with them their own followers.

10: Create infographics

One of the most viral posts on Pinterest are infographics. Infographics are long pins which give all the information needed without the need to head over to a blog post to read more. Some examples of infographics can be full recipes and images of the step by step process, or it can even be about setting up something such as mailchimp or a Facebook business page. The important thing is to give all the steps and information directly on the pin image itself.

11: Inspire

So, pinterest is not just about putting your business out there for others to see. It’s also about inspiring others not only with their businesses but also everyday life. Create pins of your favourite quotes, motivational speakers, authors, books and use this just for the sake of building a good relationship with the people that may follow your profile.

12: Rename your images

One thing I now tend to never forget is to rename all my images. Because pinterest works like google, it is so important to rename those images using relevant keywords. A simple example is if i’m writing a blog post about using squarespace or wordpress to set up a website, then all the images that go into the blog post will have names such as ‘how-to-set-up-squarespace’ or ‘why-you-should-use-wordpress-for-your-blog’. This means that when someone searches for keywords such as squarespace or wordpress, pinterest is able to crawl and find my pins all thanks to the renaming of the images but also the title of the pin itself.

13: Hashtags

You need to hash it out! Until recently, i used to use hashtags only on instagram but I came to the wonderful discovery that even pinterest uses hashtags when it comes to searching for content. So when you write the description of your pin, add a few relevant keywords as your hashtags example once again #squarespace #wordpress #websitesetup. All these keywords in different locations serve as a boost or leg up for your pin to be seen.

14: Use Keywords in board titles

Same thing as hashtags and renaming your images. Make sure that the first sentence of your pin contains relevant keywords so that it can easily be seen by the right people and that pinterest can easily find it.

15: Mix it up: Use Different Types of Content

Pinterest is known for its images and infographics but think about incorporating video or your podcast as a pin! This puts you a step above others because not everyone uses video for creating new content. And also, if you’re an introvert like me then you don’t even need to show your face to give out great content!!! Use slides, show your hands if you’re a creative, use great stock videos and do a voice over. The world is your oyster!

16: Always create fresh content

This goes without saying. Think of your favourite TV series and imagine if out of the blue they stop producing new episodes and your stuck on an episode that has the best cliffhanger that even Chuck Norris would be envious about! I’m sure you’d have a few choice words for the producer and lose interest in their work! That’s what happens when you don’t produce content on a regular basis. It doesn't have to be weekly but it needs to be consistent. And the best part is that your work will always be available even a few years from now and isn’t that a great thing?!
